Jamarat Bridge

The Jamarat Bridge is a multi-level structure in Mina, Saudi Arabia, where Hajj pilgrims perform the stoning of the devil (Ramy al-Jamarat). This ritual takes place over three days and involves throwing pebbles at three pillars (now walls), symbolizing rejection of Satan’s temptations.

Key Facts About Jamarat Bridge

  • Location: Mina, about 8 km from Masjid al-Haram in Mecca.
  • Purpose: Designed to manage the flow of millions of pilgrims performing the stoning ritual.
  • Pillar Transformation: Originally three stone pillars, they have now been expanded into long walls for safety and ease of access.
  • Capacity: Can handle 300,000 pilgrims per hour.
  • Levels: Multi-story structure with multiple entry and exit points to prevent overcrowding.

The Three Jamarat (Stoning Sites)

  • Jamarat al-Sughra (Small Jamarat)
  • Jamarat al-Wusta (Middle Jamarat)
  • Jamarat al-Aqaba (Large Jamarat)

These sites mark the three times Satan appeared to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to discourage him from obeying Allah’s command. Ibrahim (AS) rejected him by throwing stones, an act which pilgrims now reenact.

Interesting Facts

  • The Jamarat Bridge project cost over $1.2 billion and was redesigned after past incidents of overcrowding.
  • The Jamarat walls are 26 meters (85 feet) long, making it easier for pilgrims to complete the ritual.
  • More than 2.5 million pilgrims pass through the Jamarat Bridge during Hajj each year.
