The Arafat Train Station is an essential part of the Mecca Metro, officially known as the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line. This metro system is specifically designed to facilitate the movement of Hajj pilgrims between the key holy sites of Mina, Muzdalifah, and Arafat during the annual pilgrimage.


About the Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line

  • Opened: In 2010, to help manage the growing number of Hajj pilgrims.
  • Stations: The line consists of nine stations, covering key locations: Mina (3 stations), Arafat (3 stations), and Muzdalifah (3 stations)
  • Route Length: 18.1 km (11.2 miles)
  • Train Type: Fully automated, driverless trains.
  • Capacity: It can transport up to 72,000 pilgrims per hour per direction.


How Pilgrims Use It During Hajj

  • From Mina to Arafat: Pilgrims board the train to reach Arafat for the most important part of Hajj—the Day of Arafah.
  • Arafat to Muzdalifah: After sunset, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah, where they spend the night under the open sky.
  • Muzdalifah to Mina: The train then transports them back to Mina for the stoning of the Jamarat.


Interesting Facts

  • The metro operates only during Hajj and remains closed for the rest of the year.
  • It significantly reduces the need for 50,000 buses, which were previously used for transportation.
  • The entire metro system was built in just 16 months, making it one of the fastest railway projects ever completed.
