Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, required for every Muslim who is able to perform it. In its implementation, there are several types of Hajj, one of which is Hajj Qiran. Hajj Qiran is often chosen by pilgrims who wish to perform both Hajj and Umrah in one journey. This article will explain in detail the meaning, intention, and procedures of Hajj Qiran, as well as why this type of Hajj can be the right choice for those intending to worship in the Holy Land.
Linguistically, the word "qiran" comes from Arabic, meaning "to combine" or "to join." In the context of Hajj, Hajj Qiran means combining the performance of both Hajj and Umrah simultaneously, without any break between the two. This differs from Hajj Tamattu', where the pilgrim performs Umrah first and then proceeds with Hajj after a brief rest.
In Hajj Qiran, pilgrims begin the intention (niyyah) for both Hajj and Umrah at the same time. During the period of ihram, they must observe all prohibitions associated with ihram until both rituals are completed. One special feature of Hajj Qiran is that the pilgrim is only required to pay one dam (penalty) even though performing two acts of worship at once.
Intention is a very important element in the performance of Hajj. The intention for Hajj Qiran must be made at the miqat, which is the designated boundary for those about to enter the state of ihram. The miqat varies depending on the pilgrim's point of origin. Before reciting the intention, it is recommended for the pilgrim to take a ritual bath (ghusl) and wear ihram clothing.
Here is the intention (niyyah) for Hajj Qiran:
Lafal niyyah Haji Qiran:
"لَبَّيْكَ عُمْرَةً وَحَجًّا"
("Labbaika 'umratan wa hajjjan")
Translation: "Here I am responding to Your call for both Umrah and Hajj together."
After reciting this intention, the pilgrim officially enters the state of ihram and must adhere to all the rules and prohibitions that apply during ihram.
Here are the steps involved in performing Hajj Qiran, from the intention to the completion of the worship:
Starting Ihram at Miqat Pilgrims performing Hajj Qiran begin ihram at the miqat with the intention to perform both Hajj and Umrah simultaneously. After wearing ihram clothing and reciting the intention, the pilgrim must observe all the prohibitions of ihram.
Performing Tawaf Qudum Upon arrival at Masjid al-Haram, the pilgrim performs Tawaf Qudum, a welcoming tawaf, consisting of seven rounds around the Ka'bah. This tawaf is a form of respect upon entering Masjid al-Haram for the first time.
Sa'i between Safa and Marwah After Tawaf Qudum, the pilgrim performs Sa'i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah. This Sa'i is part of the Umrah ritual within Hajj Qiran.
Remaining in the State of Ihram After Tawaf Qudum and Sa'i, the pilgrim does not perform tahallul (shaving or trimming the hair). They remain in the state of ihram until the time for Hajj rites arrives.
Wuquf at Arafah On the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, pilgrims gather at the Plain of Arafah to perform wuquf, which involves staying at Arafah while praying and reciting dhikr from the time the sun passes its zenith (zuhur) until sunset. Wuquf at Arafah is one of the most essential pillars of Hajj.
Mabit at Muzdalifah After sunset, pilgrims head to Muzdalifah to spend the night (mabit) and gather pebbles for the ritual stoning of the jamarat.
Throwing of Jamrah Aqabah On the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah, pilgrims throw stones at Jamrah Aqabah in Mina as a symbolic act of rejecting Satan. After throwing the jamrah, pilgrims perform the sacrifice (hadyu) as part of the penalty for Hajj Qiran.
Tahallul Awal After the sacrifice, pilgrims perform tahallul awal by shaving or trimming part of their hair. This tahallul marks the removal of some prohibitions of ihram.
Tawaf Ifadah and Sa'i for Hajj Pilgrims return to Masjid al-Haram to perform Tawaf Ifadah, the main tawaf of Hajj, consisting of seven rounds around the Ka'bah, followed by Sa'i between Safa and Marwah.
Tahallul Tsani After completing Tawaf Ifadah and Sa'i, pilgrims perform tahallul tsani by shaving or trimming their hair again. With this tahallul, all remaining prohibitions of ihram are lifted.
